“Life always impacts business and business always impacts life.”

-Angela Wheeler

Angela WheelerIt’s been a while since I’ve published a podcast. Similar to my yoga videos, there’s a technology challenge, and with that a mental challenge, that I need to overcome to get these suckers done. I love having and recording the conversations, but the editing just makes me, well, procrastinate for almost a year to get it done.

What finally got me into Garageband to do it was the thought that I was sitting on these fabulous conversations with really great women and not sharing them with you. That’s why for the next week or so, I’m catching up on all my podcast episodes I’ve been sitting on.

Healthy Conversations About Work with Angela Wheeler

Today’s guest is Angela Wheeler, a good friend of mine, and with full disclosure, kind of my boss.

Angela’s story is really powerful and, unfortunately, all to common.

On a path to professional success, Angela burnt out in a big way. Overcome with health challenges and the realization that she was incredibly unhappy despite all the success she had achieved so quickly in her life, she left the safety of her PhD and career in academia to embark on an adventure that is still unfolding four years later.

Today, Angela uses her background in sociology and her personal experience fighting back from a dark place to inspire women to find play and alignment in their daily lives. She’s a perfect guest for this podcast and she offers some great ideas around “work/life balance.”

Work/Life Alignment Tips

Some of the insights you’ll learn from this conversation include:

  • How to find your own alignment in an already very full life
  • What it means to explore the boundaries of work and life and how to integrate that into your own life
  • Tips on how to separate work and life
  • How to hack the time we are given in a day to work for our wants, needs, and desires
  • The importance of going back to the basics and focusing on the inner work
  • How to incorporate more play into your life
  • How to overcome self-consciousness and judgement around the things that are most important to you in your life

Doing the Inner Work

I’ll leave you with some questions to ask yourself to help you on the path to the inner work we talk so much about in this episode. These are deep questions, so sit down and give yourself some time to thoughtfully answer. If that means doing a stream-of-consciousness writing exercise to start and then going back and pruning it later, so be it. Have some compassion for yourself throughout this process and know that there is no such thing as a right or wrong answer, and these answers may even evolve and change over time. Our inner work is never done! (Click to tweet – thanks!)

  • Who are you?
  • What do you want?
  • What are you good at?
  • What are you not good at?
  • What do you like about your work?
  • What do you dislike about your work?
  • What are your values?
