The Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has so many benefits. Practicing yoga can help you improve strength, balance, and flexibility so that you can keep up with your kids and feel healthier, stronger, and more limber.

Yoga can help you relieve aches and pains in your back. Have you ever had to carry a car seat around? Hello, back pain!

Yoga can help reduce stress and inflammation—let’s face it, having kids is stressful. Joyful, yes, but still stressful. By better managing your stress you can also take charge of your mental health and better prioritize your own self-care.

Yoga can help you relax, leading to better sleep. All moms want is a good night sleep!

Yoga can improve your mood and help you feel more energized throughout the day. Being in a good mood makes it more likely that you’ll show up as the parent you want to be and not the yelling, short-fused, irritated parent that shows up some days because you’ve run out of patience (no judgement, I’ve been there).

Yoga can also help you feel more connected to your community and your self, leading to better self-esteem, confidence, and compassion.

This just scratches the surface of yoga’s benefits. This practice will make you feel better in your body, mind, and soul!

How Yoga Mom Online Studio Got Started

Let me tell you a story about how Yoga Mom Online Studio came to be.

Back in 2018 before I had kids I was a successful full-time yoga teacher buzzing around town teaching 10 classes a week, private clients, and leading teacher trainings at multiple studios. I loved what I did but I also recognized that I couldn’t keep that schedule if I wanted to start a family. I looked around me in the yoga world and noticed that so many of the “celebrity” yoga teachers are not parents. I wasn’t sure exactly what to do, but I knew I needed to make a change.

Around the same time my husband and I moved to a new state where I had to start my yoga business all over again. The fact that I had developed a successful yoga career at all amidst moving seven times in seven years between five states was a testament to my drive and determination. The difference this time around was that I was pregnant.

It was challenging trying to find new teaching positions and a new community five months pregnant. Not only did I not have the same energy I used to have, but I also couldn’t move in the same way as I normally would and I wasn’t exactly a great hire considering I’d soon have to take a few months off. Instead of packing my schedule with classes, I picked up a couple classes at one studio and kept things super simple. I found a way to make my work work for me.

After I had my first child, I went back to teaching after about three months. It was difficult but it was also important for me to maintain my independence and connection to my passion and my work. After about six months I started taking on new classes and even agreed to lead a teacher training again. Things were picking up and then…

March 2020 happened. I, like all other yoga teachers, immediately pivoted to teaching online, which I was more familiar with than most seeing as I had dabbled in the online business world since 2012. Did you know I started my yoga YouTube channel in 2012!? I’m kicking myself that I never kept up a consistent content stream. Yoga with Adrienne could have been me!!! (She started in 2012 too.)

I made things work online for a while. I pivoted to leading an online teacher training but then I got pregnant again with my second child. This pregnancy was far more challenging for me physically—I felt very sick and it was hard to teach. My yoga practice physically hurt my body and I stopped practicing asana for a long time.

The cherry on top of it all was when my family moved again in October 2021 with a three- month-old baby and a two year old. We moved away from all our family back to where we had lived before. I had an established yoga community I could go back to, but times were different. It was still the pandemic and now I had two young children.  I had no access to consistent childcare and I was not in a good mental state to start teaching again. It took me over a year to figure everything out and in that time I decided that I really needed a project that would inspire and motivate me. I decided to do something I have said I would never do in my entire life. I decided to open a yoga studio.

I partnered with a friend of mine and we worked for four months to write a business plan, find space, and figure out the financials. It was some of the most challenging work I’ve ever done (financial projections are way beyond my brain’s comprehension). Everything seemed to be a go and we were getting ready to sign a lease when my business partner decided she didn’t want to do it anymore. She backed out and I was left on my own. I knew I didn’t want to open a yoga studio on my own, not only because of the financial piece but also because I wanted someone with whom I could split the work so that I could still remain somewhat present in my kids’ lives.

One of the reasons I was really excited to open this particular yoga studio was because it was in my community and I love feeling connected to a strong community. The community I live in has a lot of families and I wanted to be able to provide classes to the moms who would otherwise have to drive at least 15-20 minutes to get to the next closest studio. I understood the value of every minute in your day and I wanted to provide convenience and quality instruction to a group of people who really need a good yoga class.

This is when I decided that if I couldn’t open a brick-and-mortar yoga studio because of the prohibitive financial overhead costs and the amount of time I’d have to spend away from home, I could at least try to offer classes to moms online. In fact, the online space offered more benefits. I could teach shorter classes, making it even more convenient and accessible for moms to practice. And I could reach more people than just those who lived within 3 square miles of my neighborhood. It was the perfect fit. I still get to take my son to preschool and pick him up everyday and I don’t have to worry about making rent each month. All I have to do is usurp our sun room a few days a week to get all my filming in and make sure that my kids aren’t screaming in the background!

My Yoga Journey as a Mom

My own journey with motherhood has absolutely inspired the practices I teach now. I know how hard it is to show up and be mom and how hard it is to be a working mom. I have felt lonely, sad, joy, contentment, disappointment, anxiety, fear, happiness, and every other emotion and sometimes I feel all of these things every day. I don’t have time to go to a studio anymore and take 60-minute yoga classes. But I do still need yoga in my life because I know it makes me a better person.

Yoga Mom Online Studio offers short yoga classes for the busy mom who can’t make it to the studio but still needs the accountability to practice at home. I curate three high-quality classes each week for you to choose from so that you don’t have to waste a bunch of time trying to figure out what yoga class to take. Each week the classes change so you will always have something new and different to practice. If you’re the type of person who wants more control, you can also choose a membership level that gives you access to the full library of all my classes. I take requests, so if there is something you want to work on, just let me know and I’ll add it to my filming schedule. The classes are all on-demand so you can take class anytime, whenever it fits best in your life.
